Peterson and Chesley are Victorious on Opening Night of Legendary 100 at CLS

By Greg Parent
The opening night of the Legendary 100 was held at the Cedar Lake Speedway on Wednesday evening September 12 featuring a full racing program in the DTRA street stock and Midwest modified divisions. A strong field of 50 street stocks and 85 Midwest modifieds were on hand, as clear skies provided a pleasant afternoon but cool late summer evening. At the conclusion of the 22 event race program, Chris Peterson stood in Victory Lane for the street stock division while 2007 DTRA National Champion Greg Chesley took top honors in the Midwest modified main event.
Heat race action in the street stock division got underway with the first of five races kicking off the 2007 edition of the annual mid September gathering at the Cedar Lake Speedway. Passing points would be utilized in the heat races in both divisions with the top 18 cars locked into the main event while the remaining cars would have to run in a B Main. Butch Kummer led all the way in the nonstop first heat topping Joe Potter and Jim Geringer who started 8th. The second heat featured a great battle all race long amongst the top three cars, as Keith Tourville held off Ron Hanestad and Jason Vandekamp for the win. 2007 DTRA National Champion Steffen Snare took the lead on lap 4 of the third heat from Steve Bemboom and raced ahead of the field for the win. Bemboom and 7th starter Butch Madsen trailed. Jimmy Randall blasted into the lead on the opening lap of the fourth heat and never looked back. Michael Truscott and Nathan House, from the back of the pack, completed the top three. The final street stock heat race was a quick 10 lap affair with the Kisling team cars garnering the top two positions. Kori Richter bested 8th starter Shane Kisling while Gary Pischke settled for third.
A large field of Midwest modifieds would require eight heat races. After the lineup was jumbled slightly when pole sitter Taylor Leuthner jumped the initial start, Ryan Olson charged into the lead from the outside front row enroute to the win. Young Troy Berends and 10th starter Jeremy Kerzman followed in a race that was slowed under caution three times. Brad Hudson showed the field the way for 10 laps in the second heat with defending DTRA 100 champion Brady Peterson in second and 8th starter Jim White in third. 2006 CLS track champion Justin Schill was quick in the third heat, as he raced in front of Jonny Zastrow and rookie Skeeter Estey. With 32 feature wins already recorded in the 2007 season, Dustin Strand took the lead from George Sniezek on the second lap of the fourth heat on his way to victory. Sniezek held off Travis Krause for second. Rookie Adam Archer worked his way past leader Alan Bohlman on lap 6 of the fifth heat and fended off the challenges of Bohlman who kept this race close to the end. 11th starter Jason Miller, driving a Ray Olson owned machine, moved up eight positions to finish third. The sixth heat was a very good one. Patrick Sobolik jumped into the lead from his outside row one starting spot, but it was the fourth row starters Dan Wheeler and Greg Chesley who were on the move. Following a lap 4 caution, the battle for the top three spots was very entertaining. Sobolik managed to narrowly defeat Chesley at the line with Wheeler a close third. Rookie driver A. J. Roschen raced to an apparent victory in the seventh heat, but in post-race tech was DQed for having an illegal tire (too soft) on his car. This handed the win to Erik Peterson who had a spirited battle with Vince Corbin and Nate Szymoniak for what would have been the second place position. The final heat race saw Curt Myers come from 7th to the lead on lap 6. Paul Fontecchio led the first five circuits and settled for second but kept the pressure on Myers. Bruce Belland moved up six spots to finish third.
With heat race action in the books, the Race of Champions for the street stock division rolled out on to the track. This 10 lap race featured the top eleven cars in the DTRA National point standings. All eleven were on hand, and the race was lined straight up. After an opening lap caution required a complete restart, Keith Tourville came from fourth to first in one lap. His lead only lasted one lap though, as Steffen Snare powered by on lap 2 for the lead. Tourville and Jason Vandekamp battled for second for a couple of laps before Vandekamp set his sights on the leader. Vandekamp was able to close in on Snare in the waning laps. Steffen Snare held off Vandekamp by less than a car length for the win. Tourville, Ron Hanestad and Chris Peterson completed the top five.
Greg Chesley left little doubt as to why he is the 2007 national champion, as he ran a solid 10 laps in the DTRA Midwest Modified Race of Champions to earn top honors. Ryan Olson, Andy Jones, Dan Wheeler and Dustin Strand trailed. The top eleven cars were also on hand in this division, as the Race of Champions returned to this type of event after a long absence.
Following a brief break for some track maintenance to knock down the cushion a bit, the first of five B Mains headed trackside. The street stocks would need two B Mains while the Midwest modifieds would require three. Gary Pischke led the first ten laps of the first street stock B Main, but it was 2006 DTRA Rookie of the Year Ryan Kostreba moving by on lap 11 for the lead and eventual win in this 15 lap race. Cory Crapser also got by Pischke for second while Pischke was able to hold off Kylan Gamez for the third and final transfer spot to the feature. The second street stock B Main saw the first red flag of the evening wave for a hard crash on the backstretch. Kris Peterson lost a left right tire and slammed into the wall while Scott Herrick also made hard contact with the concrete, causing significant damage to the right front of his car. Both drivers were okay. The race was reduced to 10 laps by time limit, and it was Cory Rosen leading all the way. Chanda Fjorden-Nord raced her way past several cars to earn the second place finishing position ahead of Steve Eggersgluess.
Andy Jones led all the way in the first Midwest modified 15 lap B Main. Taylor Leuthner got past Vince Corbin for the second and final transfer spot to the feature. Trailing Corbin was Wayne Troseth and Cory Williams. Skeeter Estey led the first three laps of the second B Main before Alan Bohlman blasted by. Estey kept it close though and soon found himself under pressure from Jason Gross. With a few yellow flags keeping things tight up front, the race was reduced to 12 laps. Bohlman defeated Estey for the win with Gross, Travis Krause and Ronnie Rihn rounding out the top five. The third B Main had some problems and was shortened to 10 laps by the time limit. Rookie Klye Jumbeck led the first eight laps before Troy Jordan moved by. In a two lap dash to the finish, Jordan raced ahead of Jumbeck for the win while Bryan Lepier, Paul Fontecchio and Jesse Ogston would be watching the main event. It was now time for championship feature race action to get underway.
The street stocks were up first and the starting grid was loaded with talent for their 20 lap feature event. Shane Kisling charged from his pole starting spot into the lead on the opening lap with Nathan House and Steffen Snare close behind. Two laps into the race, the red flag flew when something broke on Mike Conrad’s car and caused him to roll over while exiting turn two. Conrad was okay. Kisling continued to lead with Snare now in second and 8th starter Chris Peterson already in third ahead of House, Jim Geringer and Keith Tourville. Eight green flag laps later the race was under caution for debris on the frontstretch. The top three cars remained the same, but it was Chris Peterson putting on an amazing display of power and driving on the restart. Peterson came from third to first and charged into the lead by the end of lap 11. Peterson proceeded to distance himself from the field while several cars battled for positions a little further back and fans kept their attention on 18th starter Jason Vandekamp and 21st starter Cory Crapser. Those two drivers were moving forward as the laps rolled by. Another red flag waved with 18 laps in when Nathan House rolled over several times at the end of the frontstretch and ended up in the pit exit lane right side up. House was okay. This erased the huge lead Peterson had built and set up a two lap dash to the finish with Kisling and Tourville looking to get past. Chris Peterson was able to hold off Shane Kisling by a few car lengths to earn a very satisfying victory for the local Somerset, Wisconsin driver. Peterson later reported in his Victory Lane interview that his car had dropped a cylinder on the last restart and he was happy to see the checkered flag waving. Kisling finished second with Keith Tourville third. Jason Vandekamp came from 18th to finish fourth while Cory Crapser was the hard charger coming from 21st to ride home in fifth place at the end. Jim Geringer, Steffen Snare, Kori Richter, Cory Rosen from 20th, and Jeff Heintz completed the top ten. Richter, Rosen, Heintz and Chanda Fjorden-Nord moved up one spot in the top ten when seventh place finisher Steffen Snare failed to scale and go to the tech area following the race. Snare was disqualified, but he had already locked up the national championship prior to this race. A protest following the race saw Jason Vandekamp tore down. Vandekamp’s car was found to be legal.
The final event of the evening was the 24 car 20 lap Midwest modified championship feature. With 2007 DTRA National Champion Greg Chesley earning the pole position through passing points, it would be a daunting task to defeat him. Chesley immediately drove into the lead at the drop of starter Jeff Stacken’s green flag with Erik Peterson, Curt Myers and Jason Miller in tow. The lone caution in this race flew with three laps scored when Brady Peterson looped his car in turn four. Ryan Olson pulled off during this yellow with heavy smoke trailing from his car. Brad Hudson also drove to the pits. The race then ran 17 laps nonstop to the finish. Greg Chesley put the exclamation mark on his 2007 season by earning a championship feature victory at the Legendary 100. Jason Miller got by Curt Myers to finish second with Myers third. Jeremy Kerzman and Dustin Stand rounded out the top five. Erik Peterson saw a top five finish vanish when his car stalled on the high side in turn four on the last lap with a mechanical breakdown. Rookie Adam Archer finished sixth ahead of Dan Wheeler, 18th starter Justin Schill, 16th starter Troy Berends, and Dustin Nelson. The same scenario played out in the Midwest mods as it had in the street stocks when seventh place finisher Dan Wheeler failed to scale and go to the tech area following the race. Wheeler was DQed. This moved Jim White into the top ten finishers.
Racing action at the Legendary 100 continues on Thursday night September 13 at eh Cedar Lake Speedway with a full qualifying program of heats, B Mains and feature races for the DTRA late model, modified and super stock divisions. Those three classes return on Friday evening September 14 for another full qualifying show plus pure stock heats. The Legendary 100 concludes on Saturday evening September 15 with B Main, Last Chance and Championship Feature races for the late models, modifieds, super stocks and pure stocks. Racing is slated to get underway at 7:00PM each night.

Doar, Nelson and Borgeson top second night features at the Legendary 100 at CLS
09/13/07
By Greg Parent
The second night of the Legendary 100 proved to be an entertaining yet somewhat bizarre evening of racing at the Cedar Lake Speedway on Thursday September 13. A full qualifying program with heats, B Main and feature races were held for the DTRA late model, modified and super stock divisions. A field of 167 cars was on hand including 65 super stocks, 65 modifieds and 37 late models. Once again, clear skies and breezy conditions made another cool late summer evening feel much more like fall weather. When the 22 event race program concluded, fans had witnessed some great racing action, a big wreck in the super stock feature, and a total power blackout while the late models were under green flag racing in their feature. Through it all, Tim Borgeson bested a very good race for the top positions in the super stock feature, Darrell Nelson raced to a win in a very competitive modified main event, and Pat Doar was victorious in the late model qualifying feature.
Six heat races for the DTRA super stock division began the racing program. Passing points would be utilized in the heat races in all divisions with the top 18 cars locked into the qualifying feature race later in the evening. Cars finishing in point positions 19-42 would run a B Main. Those who finished outside the top 42 in points would have to wait for Friday night to race again.
Tim Borgeson raced ahead of the field for 12 laps to win the first super stock heat race, but Dale Gangl made it close in the end to settle for second place ahead of Kurt Kromschroeder in a nonstop run to the checkers. Larry Boumeester, tied for second in the national DTRA point standings coming in to the night, wasted no time in charging into the lead from his pole starting position in the second heat. Boumeester won by a comfortable margin over Marcel Hoaglan and Gary Wiersgalla. Rod Dregney also used his pole starting position to blast into the lead in the third heat and 12 laps later was first across the finish line. Jason Gabrielson started ninth and gained seven spots to finish second ahead of rookie Mike Bruggeman. Ted Marrs led all the way in a quick 12 lap race to win the fourth heat with Ryan Olson and Winnipeg driver Scott Brown trailing. The fifth super stock heat race saw three different leaders. Josh Bartell led the opening lap before 2006 DTRA Rookie of the Year Jim Gullikson drove by on the high side. Gullikson led the next eight laps, but it was sixth starter Rick Kobs with a pass exiting turn two on lap 10 taking the lead and the eventual win. Gullikson was a close second in front of rookie Justin Stahl. The final heat race was another nonstop affair, as Rich Bishop planted his car against the cushion on the high side and set sail. Charlie Weber stayed closed behind but could never mount a serious bid for the lead. Ben Hillman finished a short distance behind Weber.
The race program kept rolling along with six heats for the DTRA modified division. A very competitive battle for the lead in the first heat saw the spot change hands a couple of different times. Jamie Lemke led the opening lap until Luke Schilling snuck underneath. Schilling proceeded to lead the next eight laps, but Lemke was persistent in applying the pressure and eventually regained the lead on lap 10 for the win in a nonstop 12 lap race. The first red flag of the night flew in the second modified heat race when Justin Schill rolled his modified entering turn one on lap 4. Justin was okay, but the car was done for the night. Surviving two other cautions, veteran driver Les Duellman led all the way over Mike Goodremote for the win with another veteran driver, Steve Wik, returning to racing in third. Pat Zdroik led the first 10 laps in the third modified heat, but seventh starter Darrell Nelson drove past on lap 11 for the lead and the win a lap later. Late model driver Terry Casey, racing an RJR Loose Gruff chassis car, came from 8th to finish second ahead of Jim Chyba. Joey Jensen, one of three drivers battling for the DTRA national point championship, swept past the front row starters in the fourth heat and went from fourth to first. Jensen led all 12 laps. Doug Gustafson raced his way forward from 10th to finish second in front of 8th starter Scott Hudack. Rob Fenske held off Mike Anderson and Larry Zeller to run up front in a quick 12 lap fifth heat race. The final heat for the modifieds had plenty of top cars and drivers, as both Dave Cain and Jason Miller were in this race. Both of these drivers are also racing for the DTRA national point title. However, it was Kasson driver Brad Waits moving from fourth to first on the opening lap and then holding off Dave Cain and Paul Knauf for the win. Jason Miller came from 10th to finish fourth.
In DTRA late model heat race action, Steve Laursen blasted into the lead at the drop of the green in the first heat and 12 laps later raced in front of Eric Breeschoten for the win. Rick Egersdorf held off 9th starter Terry Casey for third. Larry Stockwell led the first two laps in the second heat before 6th starter Ashley Anderson drove by. Anderson led the remaining ten laps, but 8th starter Pat Doar applied the pressure throughout a good share of the race. Brent Larson raced his way forward from 9th to finish 3rd. Doar and Larson were tied atop the DTRA national point standings coming into the evening. Jeff Keeney led the opening lap of the third heat, but Darrin Meierotto drove past him on the second lap and held the top spot the remaining 11 laps. Mike Nutzmann and Chuckie DeSmith moved forward to finish a close second and third behind the leader. The final heat race for the late models went nonstop with outside front row starter Mike Goodremote leading all the way. Joel Cryderman and Ron Schreiner stayed close.
With 16 heat races now in the books, the passing points had been determined and 18 cars in each division were locked into their feature. The next 24 cars in passing points in each class then ran a B Main with the top six finishers in each advancing to their qualifying feature race. A full 24 car field took the green in the 15 lap super stock B Main. Just two cautions slowed the pace, as the track was in very good condition and the super stocks ran well with 21 cars finishing the race. Rookie driver Mike Bruggeman led the first seven laps before Dan Carlson made the winning pass on lap 8. Eric Olson raced his way forward several positions to run second ahead of Bruggeman, Mark Stender, Brandon Jensen and Scott Brown. Another full 24 car starting grid roared to life in the 15 lap modified B Main. Like the super stocks, the modifieds ran well and their race was also was only slowed twice under caution with 21 cars finishing. Scot Danzeisen led the first nine laps before Larry Zeller got by. Zeller would lead the final six circuits for the win. Veteran racer Danzeisen held on to finish second with Paul Knauf, Wayne Troseth, Jim Chyba and Kelly Estey earning transfer positions to the feature race. Adam Hensel brought the 19 car field to the green for the late model B Main. Fifteen laps and two caution flags later, it was Hensel racing in front of the 17 finishers for the win. Mike Bear drove past several cars to finish second. Tom Nesbitt, Justin Hirt, Jeff Keeney and Larry Stockwell garnered the remaining feature race transfer positions. Stockwell narrowly held off Bryan Wennen for the sixth spot.
The 24 car super stock feature lined up for 20 racing laps. A spin on the opening lap required a complete restart. Rick Kobs led the first two laps, but while attempting to complete the third lap his car suddenly darted into the outside concrete wall on the frontstretch. A huge wreck resulted when cars under full throttle slammed into each other just past the start-finish line. The carnage was tremendous. A total of nine cars were damaged in the wreck with seven of them unable to continue. The cars of Dale Gangl and Rich Bishop appeared to be totally destroyed. Justin Stahl was momentarily knocked unconscious in the accident, and his damaged car veered into the infield and headed towards the pond. Stahl regained his senses just in time in order to stop his car before it went in. The front nose was actually just inches from the water. Also involved in the crash were the cars of Kobs, Ryan Olson, Gary Wiersgalla, Ted Marrs, Zach Wohlers and Scott Brown. Brown somehow managed to drive through the wreck while Wohlers went to the work area and returned to tag the tail of the race. Several other cars stopped to avoid the accident or took evasive action. It took several minutes to clean up the accident scene and remove the damaged cars.
When the race went green again, Jason Gabrielson had become the new leader. His reign on top was short-lived though, as Tim Borgeson moved by on the restart to grab the lead. From hereon out, a great battle for the top spots developed. A few laps later, the race was under caution when Larry Boumeester got into Gabrielson in turn two, causing Gabe’s car to spin. Boumeester was sent to the rear of the field. The battle up front continued to wage between Borgeson and Charlie Weber with Gabrielson also in the mix. Soon 10th starter Jim Gullikson was in the picture and took second on lap 7. 23rd starter Brandon Jensen moved to fourth on lap 9 while Weber took second back on lap 10. The stage was set for some great racing in the top four spots amongst Borgeson, Weber, Gullikson and Jensen. Lap after lap these cars raced hard. Borgeson narrowly held the lead for several laps before Weber took over on lap 14. The race stayed green with Weber leading Borgeson. Gullikson and Jensen were close behind. 19th starter Dan Carlson closed in on the leaders to make it a five car race up front over the last few laps. On lap 19, Borgeson regained the top spot from Weber. Borgeson was running high and Weber low. On the final lap, Gullikson got by Weber to finish a close second behind race winner Tim Borgeson. Weber held on to third ahead of Jensen and Carlson. Mike Weber, Mike Bruggeman and Jason Gabrielson completed the top eight finishing positions, as the top eight cars locked themselves into the inside eight rows for the big championship feature on Saturday night. Despite a nasty wreck, the super stock feature race proved to be very entertaining.
With race fans still talking about the action in the super stock main, the 24 car starting field for the modifieds rolled trackside for their 20 lap qualifying feature. Doug Gustafson led the field down for the green and immediately took the lead. The first of three cautions flew with two laps in when Larry Zeller contacted the turn three wall and was unable to continue. Gustafson paced the field for one more lap until Darrell Nelson drove by on lap 4. Brad Waits, Joey Jensen, Dave Cain and Jason Miller were close behind the lead duo. The yellow waved again with seven laps in when Terry Casey got into Les Duellman in turn three. Casey was sent to the rear. On the restart, Waits got by Gustafson for second. At the halfway mark, it was Nelson, Waits, Gustafson, Jensen, Cain and Miller having a good race in the top six spots. The final caution blinked on with 13 laps in when Tyler Keyser got into Rob Fenske in turn four. Shaun Kelley spun to avoid Fenske. Fenske’s car ended up with a flat tire and he retired from the race. Keyser was sent to the tail for causing the caution but drove off the track instead. The final seven laps featured some very good racing up front, as Waits put the pressure on Nelson. DTRA national point leader Dave Cain was slowly working his way forward. Cain moved past Gustafson on lap 18 for third. Nelson and Waits were just a few car lengths ahead. Jason Miller took fourth at the white flag. Darrell Nelson was able to hold back Brad Waits for the win. Dave Cain was a close third with Jason Miller right behind him. Doug Gustafson held on for fifth in front of Joey Jensen. Les Duellman and Scott Hudack completed the top eight finishers and earned starting berths on the inside eight rows for the championship feature on Saturday night.
What would end up being the final race of the night, the late model feature cars lined up 23 strong for 25 laps of racing. Kelly Estey was unable to start. This race would have a bizarre event take place. With four laps in the books and Pat Doar leading, suddenly the entire facility went dark. Pitch black dark for a few seconds until the backup power kicked in for the scoring tower, PA, flag stand and a couple of other areas. The entire race track was cast in blackness with 23 cars under full throttle. What transpired next was just short of a miracle. All 23 cars managed to get slowed down and stopped without any cars wrecking or sustaining any damage. Truly an amazing job by 23 talented drivers, as some drivers reported afterwards that they simply looked ahead at either the gauges or brake rotors of the cars in front of them to judge where they were. The power outage encompassed several homes around the area, so it was more than just a track issue. The power was restored in short order and the big track lights needed to cool off a bit before they could be relit. Track officials decided to postpone the Race of Champions scheduled for the super stock and modified divisions, as the curfew loomed. The late model race would be completed though. This was the first time in a long time that anyone could recall the track being cast in total darkness due to a power outage. Reminiscent of the very early days 50 years ago, the motor homes and vehicles in the turn 3-4 tier parking turned on their headlights immediately after the track went dark in order to cast some light on the track and help officials and drivers to see where the race cars were located.
With power and lights restored, the late model feature race restarted. The race then ran 21 laps nonstop to the finish. Mike Nutzmann drove past Ashley Anderson on the restart for second with Steve Laursen, Brent Larson and Joel Cryderman soon battling for positions 4-6. These three drivers swapped those spots several times. As Doar continued to lead and work lapped traffic, the race for third heated up when this group caught up to Ashley Anderson. Suddenly Mike Nutzmann was just in front and the race was now for second from lap 20 to the finish. Pat Doar maintained a comfortable lead as the laps clicked off. As flagman Jeff Stacken’s waved the checkered flags, Pat Doar drove under for the win. Mike Nutzmann finished second with Joel Cryderman just barely edging past Ashley Anderson for third at the finish line. Brent Larson placed fifth with Steve Laursen sixth, Terry Casey seventh and Ron Schreiner eighth. The top eight drivers earned the right to start on the inside eight rows in the championship feature on Saturday night.
Any of the top eight finishers in the feature races tonight could elect to try to better their starting spot in the Saturday night championship feature race for the Legendary 100 title by running again in another full qualifying race program on Friday night September 14. The late model, modified and super stock divisions will be in action again along with three Race of Champions for these classes and heat races for the pure stocks. Several of the top eight finishers from the Thursday night qualifying features will likely elect to keep their spot and not race in the Friday night program. Racing action is slated to get underway with the first heat taking the green at 7:00PM on Friday, as the third night of racing at the Legendary 100 takes place at the Cedar Lake Speedway. Night 3, September 14th.
Larson, Miller and Gangl are winners on the third night of the Legendary 100 at CLS
09/14/07
By Greg Parent
With clear skies and unseasonably cool weather still the norm, the third night of the Legendary 100 showcased a battle for the DTRA national point championship in the late model division while also providing an interesting twist of fate in the super stock class on Friday September 14 at the Cedar Lake Speedway. Some cars were already qualified for the Saturday night championship feature races from Thursday action, but a strong field of 166 cars was on hand for the second qualifying program including heats, B Main and feature races for the DTRA late model, modified and super stock divisions along with heat races for the pure stocks.
When the 21 event program concluded, a hearty group of fans had witnessed a dramatic battle for the DTRA national point championship in the late model division that came right down to the feature race with Brent Larson needing to win. Dale Gangl returned with a repaired race car from the big wreck the night before in the super stock division to earn a popular and very satisfying victory. Jason Miller wasn’t satisfied with his fourth place finish the previous night in the modified division, so he returned to earn the outside front row starting position for the big championship feature race on Saturday night by winning the modified qualifying feature. Indeed, plenty of interesting racing action and drama played out once again on Friday night at this popular mid September event held each year at the Cedar Lake Speedway.
Five heat races for the field of 55 DTRA super stocks on hand got the racing action underway. Lyle Archambeau was not able to attend the Thursday night qualifying program, but he made up for his absence by leading all the way in the first heat. Dale Gangl amazingly returned to action with a repaired race car from the big wreck in the feature race the night before and moved from seventh to finish second. Greg Nippoldt had suffered a broken nose the previous night when he was hit in the face shield with a large mud clod, but he was back in action and finished third. The second heat was a quick 12 lap affair with Mike Bellefeuille besting newcomer Cory Davis and J. B. Stortz for the win. Steve Hallquist held off Randy Spacek and rookie Zach Wohlers in a caution-free victory in the third heat. Another nonstop run in the fourth heat saw Matt Sinna pull away for the win over Dustin Nelson and Darrin Meirotto. Ben Hillman showed the field the quick way around the 3/8 mile CLS speedway by leading all the way in the fifth heat to defeat Justin Dodge and 11th starter Mike Weber.
A field of 54 DTRA modifieds also ran five heat races. Eric Bjorklund defeated Kevin Viebrock and Scott Splittstoesser for the win in the first heat. Even though Darrell Nelson had won the qualifying feature the night before, he returned to run a heat race on Friday and won by a wide margin over second place finisher Steve Wik. Kelly Estey came from eighth to finish third. Pat Zdroik led the first two laps of the third heat before Joey Jensen blasted by. Jensen led the remaining ten laps for the win over Zdroik and Jody Bellefeuille. Paul Knauf led the opening lap in the fourth heat, but Scott Hudack showed the way for the remainder of the race. Knauf settled for second ahead of 11th starter Jason Miller. The fifth heat saw four different leaders. Luke Schilling took off into the lead for the first three laps, but a spin in turn four relegated him to the rear of the field. Rick Friendt then led the next three laps with sparks spewing from underneath his car. Friendt’s machine finally broke something in the driveline and he was done. Rookie driver Mark Froehlich led the next four laps, but Jeff Spacek drove past on lap 11 for the lead and eventual win. Froehlich held off 9th starter Jamie Lemke for second.
The DTRA late models had 33 cars, so three heat races were in order. Terry Casey kept Steve Laursen behind him for 12 laps to win the first heat with Mike Goodremote moving up three spots to finish third. Darrin Meiretto was smooth up front in the second heat and led all the way. Ron Schreiner and 8th starter Pat Doar trailed. Brent Larson needed to win the third heat in order to have a shot at the DTRA national point title. After Caley Emerson led the opening lap, Larson moved into the lead from his fourth starting spot and never looked back. Darrell Nelson finished second ahead of 7th starter Chuckie DeSmith.
Two heats for the 24 pure stocks on hand would see two of the four Richards team cars earn victories. Kris Berg led the first three laps in the opening heat before Jared Amundson got by. Amundson led two laps until 9th starter Tommy Richards raced by for the win. Amundson finished second with Chris Wert in third. George Richards led all the way in the second heat, but Danny Richards applied the pressure from mid race on. Danny settled for a close second with 9th starter Josh Smith riding home in third. The pure stocks will return for their feature race on Saturday night.
A full 24 car starting field for the 15 lap super stock B Main rolled on to the track. It would be the final attempt for six drivers to earn starting berths in the qualifying feature race. Just two cautions for multi-car accidents slowed the pace in the early laps, but then 13 straight green flag laps saw a very good battle for the top spot take place. Lance Leu led the first six laps, but Mike Bear blasted by on the high side on lap 7. Bear led through lap 12, but Leu retook the lead on lap 13 and was able to hold on for the win. Completing the top six transfer spots were Bear, Zach Wohlers, Cy Hoaglan, Mike Loomis and Dave Emerfoll.
Another full 24 car starting grid for the modified B Main would see six drivers move on while the rest would load up and watch. Jaymie Lautigar grabbed the early lead after an opening lap spin by Mike Wood required a complete restart. With one lap in, a big wreck on the backstretch involving eight cars brought the race under the red flag. Steve Lavasseur’s modified rolled over in the incident. Kevin Rogers’ car went underneath the rear end of Troy Jordan’s machine rupturing the fuel cell and spilling a full load of fuel on the low side of the track. Other cars involved in the wreck included Dave Siercks, Tim Van Meter, Rick Cannata, Mike Wood, and Scoot Splittstoesser. All drivers were okay, and four cars were unable to continue. Due to the long red flag, the race was reduced to 12 laps. Lautigar continued to lead when the green replaced the red, but a yellow with three laps in for a spin by Alan Mondus slowed the pace. Luke Schilling was sent to the rear for causing it. Jim Chyba eventually worked his way past Lautigar for the lead on lap 6 and went on to win. Lautigar held off Al Uotinen for second with Mondus and Joe Bean completing the top five. The final transfer spot came right down to the wire, as Luke Schilling raced his way back up through the field, passed Mike Mueller on the last lap, and just edged out Ryan Muzik by inches at the finish line to earn the final starting spot in the qualifying feature.
The late model B Main saw two cars scratch, so 13 starters would be racing for the six transfer positions into their feature race. This race had some problems, as four cautions waved for various incidents. The race was ultimately reduced to 12 laps, as only eight cars ended up finishing. Rick Egersdorf led all the way for the win. Justin Hirt, Steve Hucovski, Paul Hipsag, Jeff Keeney and Jim Carlson also earned their way into the feature race. Brent Mueller and Bryan Wennen were close behind Carlson for the final transfer spot.
Mike Weber and Dale Gangl brought the 24 car starting field around for the green flag in the 20 lap super stock qualifying feature race. The top eight finishers would earn starting spots on the outside of the first eight rows for their Legendary 100 championship feature race on Saturday night. Gangl edged past Weber for the lead at the drop of the green with Dustin Nelson third and Randy Spacek fourth. The race was under the first of three cautions with five laps in when Lyle Archambeau had something break in the rear end of his car in turn 3. He collected the cars of Ben Hillman, Mike Bellefeuille, Justin Doge and Greg Nippoldt. Archambeau and Nippoldt were done. On the restart, Rod Dregney and Cory Davis got locked together in turn 4 to bring out the second yellow of the race. Davis was relegated to the rear of the field. Under green again, Dustin Nelson moved underneath Mike Weber on lap 8 for second but Weber regained the spot on lap 10. At the midway point, the final caution flew when Lance Leu stalled in turn 2 with a breakdown. The top four running order remained the same with J. B. Stortz now up to fifth. The race then ran 10 laps green to the finish. Weber applied the pressure on Gangl in the late stages of the race, but he was not able to gain the lead. Dale Gangl and his crew had worked all night and day to repair what appeared to be a totally destroyed race car from the night before and came back for a well-earned victory. Mike Weber finished second. Randy Spacek got by Dustin Nelson on the final lap to finish third with J. B. Stortz completing the top five. The all-important final three transfer positions into the Saturday night championship feature saw Matt Sinna, Eric Olson and Rod Dregney finish sixth through eighth.
With Thursday night feature winner Darrell Nelson electing not to start, Jeff Spacek and Jason Miller paced the 23 car qualifying feature field to the green. The original start was called off when Jim Chyba spun in turn 1. On the second start attempt, Jason Miller raced into the lead. One lap later the race was slowed under caution when Mike Goodremote spun in turn 1, but track officials decided to do a complete restart for scoring purposes. The third time was the charm and Miller again took the lead. With one lap in, Rick Rivord and Jeremy Kerzman got together exiting turn 2 with Rivord spinning. Kerzman was tagged with the caution. The race then went 19 laps nonstop to the finish. Joey Jensen passed Jeff Spacek on lap 2 for second while 7th starter Kelly Estey got by Spacek on lap 4 for third. Miller and Jensen then proceeded to have a very good race for the lead. Jensen actually claimed the top spot at the halfway mark on lap 10, but Miller stormed back to regain the #1 position a lap later. As the laps clicked by, the battle for the eighth and final transfer spot into the Saturday night championship feature heated up. Miller continued to hold off Jensen up front. Four cars were battling for the seventh through tenth positions late in the race including Paul Knauf, Jamie Lemke, Mark Froehlich, and Jody Bellefeuille. At the finish, it was Jason Miller with the win over Joey Jensen. Finishing third through eighth were Kelly Estey, Jeff Spacek, Scott Hudack, Ron Schreiner, Paul Knauf and Jody Bellefeuille. Some post-race drama played out when fourth place finisher Jeff Spacek did not go to the tech area and was disqualified. This moved the ninth place finisher Mark Froehlich up into the eighth finishing position which meant he was headed to the main event on Saturday night.
Race fans had already witnessed some entertaining and interesting events, but the drama would continue with the final race of the night. The DTRA national point championship in the late model division had come down to this race. Brent Larson had to finish first in order to win the championship by one point over Pat Doar. Larson would start from the pole while Doar would go from fourth. At the drop of flagman Jeff Stacken’s green flag, Brent Larson and Adam Hensel brought the 24 car field to life. Larson edged past Hensel for the lead with Doar running in third. The leaders encountered lapped traffic eight laps into the race. Contact between the second place car of Hensel and the lapped car of Steve Hucovski on lap 13 brought out the lone caution of the race, as Hensel and Hucovski got hooked together entering turn three. Hucovski’s car slid into the concrete wall. As the wrecker crews were separating the two cars, the yellow turned into a red when one of the crew members was sprayed in the face by a antifreeze from the 88 car while on the hook. Fortunately he only required a brief stay in the back of the ambulance. When the race returned to green, Larson continued to lead Hensel and Doar. Terry Casey moved past Scott Gilberts for fourth on lap 17 and the leaders were in lapped traffic again on lap 18. Larson worked the traffic well and maintained his lead. Coming down to take the white flag, Doar passed Hensel for the second spot with Larson several car lengths in front. At the checkers, Larson defeated Doar and accomplished exactly what he needed to. Brent Larson had not only won the race but also won the DTRA national point championship, capping off a stellar night for the young Lake Elmo, MN driver. Hensel finished third in front of Casey. Chuckie DeSmith was fifth followed by Gilberts, Ron Schreiner, and Mike Goodremote in the top eight spots.
The stage had now been set for the final night of racing action at the Legendary 100. Saturday night September 15 will see a full show of B Main; Last Chance and Championship Feature races take place. Tim Borgeson and Dale Gangl will lead the super stock field in their feature race while Darrell Nelson and Jason Miller will comprise the front row of the modified main event. Pat Doar and Brent Larson will be on the front row of the late model feature. The pure stocks will also run their feature event with the Richards family comprising three of the top four starting positions. The Race of Champions in the DTRA late model, modified and super stock divisions will also take place following feature race action. Fans can watch another great evening of racing and see who will be the 2007 Legendary 100 champions in the four classes in competition. Racing is slated to get underway at 6:30 PM on Saturday.

Doar, Waits, Gangl and Richards win Legendary 100 titles at the Cedar Lake Speedway
09/15/07
By Greg Parent
Concluding the fourth straight night of racing at the Cedar Lake Speedway, the Legendary 100 championship titles were decided in the DTRA late model, modified and super stock divisions on Saturday September 15. The local area pure stocks also ran their feature race. Sunny skies and warmer temperatures brought out a large crowd of fans for the final night. Following the B Mains and Last Chance Races, the Championship Features were won by Pat Doar in the late models, Brad Waits in the modifieds, Dale Gangl in the super stocks and Tommy Richards in the pure stocks.
Racing got underway with B Main qualifying races in the three DTRA divisions. The super stocks ran three 15 lap B Mains with the top two finishers transferring to their championship feature race. Darrin Meierotto raced ahead of the field for the win in the first B Main with Ben Hillman holding on to the final transfer position in a race slowed only once under caution. The second B Main ran green all the way with Ted Marrs topping Zach Wolhers. Another nonstop race in the third B Main saw Mike Bellefeuille come from the inside second row to the lead by the end of the first lap. Bellefeuille raced to victory over Mark Stender.
The modifieds also ran three 15 lap B Mains with the top two finishers advancing to their championship feature race. The first modified B Main saw the only red flag of the night. With five laps in, Dan Hesch hit the wall on the front straightaway and collected Rick Cannata and Dallas Gulbrandson. Cannata’s car flipped over wildly before coming to rest right side up. Cannata was okay, but all three cars were done. The race itself had three different leaders. Jeff Spacek led the first six laps before something broke and sent his car into the turn 1 wall and out of action. Shaun Kelley then led the next three laps until a mechanical failure sent him to the infield. Kevin Viebrock inherited the lead and paced the field for the remaining six laps to grab the win. Eric Bjorklund held off Jeremy Kerzman for second. The second B Main ran clean and green with Jaymie Lautigar pulling away for the win. Scott Splittstoesser passed Pat Zdroik on lap 11 for second and was able to keep Zdroik at bay over the final four laps to garner the final transfer spot. The third B Main was slowed only once under caution when the second place car of Jim Chyba tapped the concrete wall entering turn 3 and rode the hook to the pits. Steve Wik led all the way, but Jay Richardson stayed close behind over the final nine laps for second.
Two 15 lap B Mains in the late model division would see the top three finishers earn a starting spot in their championship feature. Both races ran caution-free. Repeating his super stock B Main win, Darrin Meierotto topped the first late model B Main by leading all the way. Shaun Peterson and last year’s runner-up Justin Ritchie also advanced. Rookie late model driver Cory Mahder defeated veteran Tom Nesbitt in the second B Main while crate late model driver Justin Hirt earned the final transfer position.
Several drivers still had one more chance to earn a starting berth in the championship feature races in the DTRA super stock, modified and late model divisions. The format is driver-friendly with the Last Chance Races still transferring two more cars to the tail end of the feature races. The 15 lap super stock Last Chance Race was slowed three times under yellow, as the leaders raced hard for the top two spots. Kurt Kromschroeder led the opening two laps before his night ended against the turn 2 wall after being tagged by Mike Loomis. Dave Emerfol led the next six laps until 17th starter Cory Davis took over the top spot. Davis led the final four laps, as the race was reduced to 12 laps due to time limit. Emerfol held on for second. The 15 lap modified Last Chance Race also had plenty of action up front. Marc Johnson led the opening lap. Jeremy Kerzman took over the lead on lap 2. One lap later a five car melee in turn 2 slowed the pace. Kerzman continued to lead when the race went back green. On lap 12, Al Uotinen raced underneath Kerzman for the lead and eventual win. Ryan Muzik closed in on Kerzman, but Kerzman was able to maintain the second place finishing position. The late model Last Chance race had 12 cars for 12 laps. Caley Emerson led all the way with Jeff Keeney earning the final transfer spot for their feature race. The fields were now set for championship race action.
Following driver introductions for all three DTRA divisions and a fireworks display while the cars circled the track three-wide, the first Legendary 100 title of the evening would be decided in the DTRA super stock division. The 24 car starting field would race 30 laps to determine the victor. Qualifying feature winners Tim Borgeson and Dale Gangl brought the field around for flagman Jeff Stacken’s green flag. Dale Gangl grabbed the early lead with a group of cars battling behind him. The race was under the first of three cautions for a spin by Dave Emerfol in turn 2 with three laps in. On the restart, Zach Wohler spun in turn 2 to bring out the second yellow of the race. Dale Gangl continued to lead Tim Borgeson when the race returned to green. With nine laps in, the final caution waved when Brandon Jensen broke something in the rear end of his car and stalled in turn 3. Gangl continued to lead over Borgeson, Jim Gullikson and Mike Weber. At the midway point of the race, the running order remained the same up front with Randy Spacek in fifth. Mike Weber began moving forward, as he raced to third on lap 17 and then to second on lap 19. Over the next four laps, Weber and Borgeson swapped the second spot before Weber took control. While the leaders worked lapped traffic, Gullikson passed Borgeson for third on lap 25 with Dan Carlson also moving into the top five. Dale Gangl completed a remarkable turn of events after being involved in a nasty wreck on Thursday night when he crossed the finish line to win the Legendary 100 title in the super stock division. Finishing second through fifth was Mike Weber, Jim Gullikson, Tim Borgeson, and Dan Carlson. Completing the top ten finishers were Charlie Weber, Randy Spacek, Dustin Nelson, Eric Olson and Matt Sinna. Cory Davis advanced the most positions coming from 23rd to finish 11th, as just three cars failed to finish the race.
With preliminary feature winners Darrell Nelson and Jason Miller pacing the 24 car DTRA modified field, the green flag flew for 30 racing laps. Darrell Nelson took the early lead with Jason Miller close behind. Brad Waits and Joey Jensen battled for third. As the race stayed under green, Waits closed in on Miller to battle for second while Dave Cain began working on Jensen for fourth. Cain was soon in fourth. On lap 10, Waits moved by Miller for second and set his sights on Nelson. It was Nelson running high and Waits running low, as the track was in great racing condition. On lap 13, Waits drove by Nelson for the lead while Cain raced past Miller for third. At the midway point, it was Waits, Nelson, Cain, Miller and Jensen in the top five with Les Duellman a short distance back in sixth. The race continued under green with Cain passing Nelson for second on lap 21. Jensen got by Miller a lap later to run fourth. In a nonstop 30 lap run to the checkers, Brad Waits and his Goodyear tire shod Modified traveled north and conquered the field for an impressive victory over many strong contenders. Waits would be crowned the 2007 Legendary 100 champion in the modified division. Dave Cain finished second ahead of Darrell Nelson, Joey Jensen and Jason Miller. Finishing sixth through tenth was Les Duellman, Paul Knauf, Jody Bellefeuille, Scott Hudack and Kelly Estey. Al Uotinen moved up the most positions in this race, as he gained eight spots to finish 16th with 20 of the original 24 starters running in the end.
Defending DTRA 100 champion Pat Doar and 2007 DTRA national point champion Brent Larson led the field to the green in the 40 lap DTRA late model feature race for the Legendary 100 title. Doar took the early lead over Larson with Joel Cryderman close behind. Larson moved underneath Doar for the lead on lap 3 while Ashley Anderson and Adam Hensel swapped the fourth and fifth spots. Larson began to distance himself from the field, but on lap 8 his B1 machine began trailing some smoke. Larson came upon lapped traffic 12 laps into the race, as the leaders were generally running up high against the cushion. Larson’s smoking mount continued to lead. Chuckie DeSmith passed Hensel for fifth on lap 17. Suddenly with 19 laps in the books, leader Brent Larson slowed exiting turn 2 and came to a stop in turn 3 to bring out the first caution of the race. A broken birdcage and flat tire ended his bid for the win, as he rode the hook to the pits. Pat Doar inherited the lead. One lap later at the midway point of the race, it was Doar, Cryderman, Anderson, DeSmith and Hensel in the top five. DeSmith moved past Anderson on lap 24 for third. Cryderman began challenging Doar for the lead on lap 28, as the two often raced side-by-side. Doar was able to hold on. Anderson moved back past DeSmith for third on lap 28 and began closing in on the leaders. The final caution of the race waved on lap 37 when Cory Mahder stopped in turn 1 with a breakdown. With scoring reverting back to lap 36, this would set the stage for a four lap dash to the finish. On the restart, misfortune struck second place runner Joel Cryderman when he hit the cone. Cryderman applied the pressure on leader Doar over the next two laps and drove by for the lead on lap 38. Cryderman crossed the finish line for an apparent victory; however, track rules clearly indicate that when a driver hits the cone on a restart a five position penalty is assessed. This gave the win to Pat Doar. Ashley Anderson finished second with Chuckie DeSmith in third. Adam Hensel and Steve Laursen completed the top five. Following the penalty, Cryderman was scored in sixth ahead of Ron Schreiner, Mike Goodremote, Terry Casey and Mike Nutzmann. Justin Hirt gained ten positions in coming from 22nd to finish 12th. More drama on top of what had already been an entertaining four nights of racing will keep fans talking about the 2007 Legendary 100 for some time.
Racing was not done by any means though, as 22 of the local area pure stock cars rolled on to the track for their 15 lap feature race. Tommy Richards took the lead from his pole starting position at the drop of the green. The race was slowed six times under caution, but each time Richards would maintain his lead. His brother, Danny Richards, soon began to apply the pressure for the lead following each yellow flag. In the end, it was Tommy Richards leading all the way for the win over Danny Richards. Following the two brothers were Josh Smith, Jared Amundson and Carolyn Nosser in the top five. Completing the top ten finishers were Nathan Fisk from 17th, Josh Bazey from 16th, Ashley Huseby from 18th, Austin Blom and Mike Knudtson.
The final three events of the evening would be the DTRA Race of Champions for the top eleven cars in the point standings. Twelve laps would be the distance in each race with the super stocks up first. Larry Boumeester led the opening lap, but Mike Bellefeuille raced to the lead on lap 2. The battle up front was very good in this race. On lap 9, Mike Weber worked his way past Bellefeuille for the lead. Weber led the remaining four laps for the win over Bellefeuille, 8th starter Jim Gullikson, Boumeester and Dale Gangl to earn the $750 top prize. The modified Race of Champions also ran nonstop, as Dave Cain left little doubt who would win the $1,000 top prize. Cain led all the way for the win with Joey Jensen a close second. Jason Miller finished third ahead of Darrell Nelson and Luke Schilling. The final race of the night was for $2,000 to win the late model Race of Champions. Brent Larson’s crew was able to make repairs to his car following his breakdown in the late model feature race, and he immediately took the lead from his pole starting position. A caution two laps into the race for Ron Schreiner contacting the turn 1 wall slowed the pace. Larson blasted into the lead again on the restart and took control for the remaining 10 laps to win by a comfortable margin. Pat Doar, Steve Laursen, Chuckie DeSmith, and Rick Egersdorf rounded out the top five.
Cedar Lake Speedway would like to thank the drivers, pit crew members, race fans and sponsors for supporting this event and the track throughout the 2007 racing season. The third annual Enduro paying $10,000 to win will be held on Saturday afternoon September 22 starting at 1:00 PM. The following day Sunday September 23 will be the final event of 2007 at the speedway when CLS hosts a large demolition derby slated to start at 1:00 PM.
